Washington Sundar is also likely to be ruled out of the India vs Sri Lanka Test series. Sundar was selected only for the second Test as he has been recovering from a hamstring injury.
At present, it seems like the spin bowling all-rounder's chances of joining the team for the match in Colombo are very slim. If Washington Sundar is ruled out of the series, then it will be the third injury blow for the India National Cricket Team after Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharshan.
Washington Sundar is likely to be ruled out of the India vs Sri Lanka Test series
Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the series because of a knee injury, and Sai Sudharshan is recovering from a toe injury. The team management named Washington Sundar as the sixteenth member for the second Test match of the two-match series, which will be held in Colombo, due to the nature of his injury. For Sundar to join the team in Sri Lanka was a fifty-fifty chance during the team selection.
If the latest claims made by The Times of India are to be believed, then there is a very slim possibility for Washington Sundar to link up with the team in Sri Lanka.
If somehow he manages to recover from the hamstring injury and joins the team, then without prior preparations, his selection in the playing eleven is unlikely to happen. After the injury, the all-rounder did not play a lot of cricket.
The medical team does not want to take any decision in a hurry
He sustained the injury in the last match, during the multi-format series in England. Since then, his workload remains under the scanner, and the medical team of the board does not want to take any decision in a hurry as there are already instances where players have been re-injuredmmediately after making a return.
"Washington was picked only for the second Test, knowing it will be touch-and-go for him to gain full fitness. He hasn’t played much after sustaining the injury in England last month. His workload is being carefully increased," a BCCI source told Times of India.
"There have been a few instances where players have broken down immediately after recovering from an injury... At this moment, the chances of Washington going to Sri Lanka are very slim. The team management has been told to plan accordingly. The BCCI medical team is wary of pushing him into a Test match," the source added.
Injury updates of Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep
The source also mentioned that if Washington Sundar is put into the squad as the sixteenth member, then the board may not announce his replacement if he rules himself out. However, the final decision is yet to be taken. Next week, after a detailed assessment, the final decision is likely to be taken.
In a separate update, injured fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep are still going through their rehabilitation programme, with one fixed return date yet to be confirmed for both of them.
