Former India opener Wasim Jaffer stated that wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul's natural batting talent is on par with Virat Kohli's. Speaking during a television show, the cricketer-turned-commentator stated that all naturally gifted players cannot go on to achieve long and successful international careers.

Rahul made his international debut during the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2014. The wicketkeeper batter has played 238 matches for Team India across formats. He recently had a disappointing ODI series against England, scoring just 1 and 12 in his two innings.

Wasim Jaffer Says KL Rahul Has Talent Equal to Virat Kohli

Speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan, Wasim Jaffer said that KL Rahul has the technique and ability to succeed in all three formats. However, he believes Rahul has not achieved as much as his talent deserves and feels he could have scored many more runs.

"KL is a top-class player who plays all three formats remarkably well. Technically sound, composed, and level-headed. Even though he is still actively playing, I believe he has somewhat underachieved given his skill set."

"He can score so many more runs for both India and his franchise. In terms of pure talent and quality, I genuinely believe he is at par with Virat Kohli, but it is Virat's elite mentality that creates that ultimate separation between KL and Virat."

Wasim Jaffer Recalls Chris Gayle's Professionalism at Punjab Kings

Wasim Jaffer also spoke about his experience of working with Chris Gayle at Punjab Kings. Jaffer said Gayle used the auction snub as motivation to prove his critics wrong. He added that Gayle responded with another outstanding IPL season for Punjab.

"When we worked with Chris Gayle, we could see how much pride he took in his game. Before Punjab picked him up, he had played for RCB for a very long time, and then came an auction where no one picked him initially until Punjab stepped in during the final round."

"For a player of his stature, I feel his ego was slightly hurt by being picked in the last round. But he channelled that and went on to score 500 to 600 runs for Punjab that season. Behind that super chilled-out persona, he was an absolute professional who knew there was money riding on him and that he had to deliver."

Before joining Punjab, Gayle had enjoyed a successful IPL career with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, he remained unsold for most of the auction before Punjab signed him in the final round.

Virat Kohli vs KL Rahul: International Career Comparison

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have shared the Indian dressing room for more than a decade. Both are among India's most talented batters, but their careers have taken different paths. Rahul has earned praise for his elegant batting and versatility, while Kohli has been consistent across formats.

Kohli made his international debut six years before Rahul and has built one of the greatest careers in cricket. He has scored more than 28,000 international runs at an average above 52 across formats, including 85 centuries.

Rahul has scored nearly 10,000 runs and 22 centuries in 238 matches. However, injuries and inconsistent form have prevented him from matching the numbers many expected from a batter of his talent.

Former India captain Kris Srikkanth criticized head coach Gautam Gambhir after India's 2-1 ODI series defeat to England. KL Rahul came in during the 45th over and scored 12 off eight balls while chasing the 388-run target.
