The 25-year-old India National Cricket Team all-rounder Washington Sundar made his debut for the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 19th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Sunday, April 6.

Washington Sundar finally received his Gujarat Titans cap for the match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad after warming the bench for a long time.

Washington Sundar doesn't get the opportunity to bowl

Washington Sundar was bought by the Gujarat Titans for Rs 3.20 crore at the Indian Premier League 2025 mega auction after being released by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Sundar has been the player who has been affected the most since the introduction of the impact player rule as the teams prefer specialists over all-rounders in the playing XI.

He did not get the opportunity to play in the first three matches of the season for the Gujarat Titans (GT), but a slow track in Hyderabad prompted the Ashish Nehra-led team to give Sundar a chance.

However, surprisingly, Shubman Gill didn't allow Washington Sundar to bowl. He used only five bowling options in the match - Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Prasidh Krishna, Rashid Khan, and Sai Kishore - with Siraj being the most successful with 4 wickets in his bag.

Sundar, meanwhile, was not totally ignored by the Gujarat Titans team management as he was sent to bat at the No.4 spot following the early dismissals of Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler inside 4 overs.

Sundar repaid the faith of the team management and played a brilliant knock with the bat, smashing 49 runs. In the 6th over of the innings, he took Simarjeet Singh to the cleaners with a 20-run over.

Sundar smashed back-to-back fours on the first two balls and then smashed a six over fine-leg on the fourth ball over. He saved best for the last as on the sixth ball, he recreated his famous Gabba six off Pat Cummins.

Rashid Khan fails again for GT

The star leg-spinner Rashid Khan once again failed for the Gujarat Titans in the match as he went wicketless and conceded 31 runs in 4 overs. Notably, he has gone wicketless now for three successive games in IPL 2025 - only the second time in his IPL career.

Talking about Rashid Khan ahead of the match, the former India batter Wasim Jaffer said that the form of the leg-spinner is a big concern. He stated:

"Yeah, I mean, Rashid's form is a concern for them. But it's a twin-edge sword with Sunrisers batting. It can go, you know, either 260, 270 or they can get out cheaply as well. So, Gujarat will be hoping that way. You know, they'll be hoping to put the ball in the spot and hope they pick wickets. But Gujarat has got a very strong team, whichever way they go. They've got good batters, good bowlers. But Rashid's form is a concern for them."

During the same discussion, Mark Boucher said that Rashid Khan never backs down to a challenge. He stated:

"He's the type of guy that loves big games. This will be a big game for him. He'll know that you know, against the Sunrisers, they're going to come after him. And he's never backed down to a challenge. And I don't expect him to back down to this as well. Sometimes, you know, when people start looking at your form, you sort of look at yourself in the mirror the whole time.

"For me, he just needs to get into the game. Once he gets into the game, everything happens naturally. And I think, you know, for him, a challenge like this might get the best out of him, knowing that they're going to come after him."
