Shreyas Iyer shines for Punjab Kings with a sensational knock

Iyer impressed everyone with his exceptional batting performance on his captaincy debut for the Punjab Kings. He batted at the No.3 position and played an attacking brand of cricket, smashing an unbeaten 97 runs.

Shreyas Iyer switched on his beast mode in the 17th over of the innings after Prasidh Krishna hit him brutally on the ribcage with a short ball.

Iyer responded to the painful blow by dispatching Krishna for a six over wide long-on. On the next ball, Iyer smashed a four over backward point, before smashing back-to-back sixes to punish the pacer.

On the last ball as well, Iyer went for a six but he was denied it by Rahul Tewatia, who showcased an exceptional fielding effort on the boundary line.

Iyer smashed the delivery from Krishna towards long-on, where Tewatia stretched as far as he could, grabbed the ball over his head, and threw it back inside.

The third umpire watched multiple replays of Tewatia's efforts before declaring that everything was fine and Shreyas Iyer was denied a six. Also, Prasidh Krishna finished with 24 runs in that over.

Rahul Tewatia did well in the IPL, but... - Piyush Chawla

Speaking ahead of the match on ESPNCricinfo, the Indian spinner Piyush Chawla said that Gujarat Titans have got a weak middle-order and the likes of Rahul Tewatia are not capable of building innings. He elaborated:

"The middle order seems to be very weak. Rahul Tewatia did well in the IPL, but he did well when he went to bat and when there were 4 overs left. We have seen that when there are 10-12 overs left, the art of building innings is different.

"Shahrukh Khan's name has been in the news, but there has been no such performance. So, there will be a lot of pressure on him because he is a retained player. Although Washington Sundar is a good bowler, he is in the team as an all-rounder.

"His first job is to play the game. Although, when he came in the beginning, he was a bowler, but now when he comes in the middle order, you can't expect him to be a reliable bowler. It's a matter of confidence. If you ask me, the middle order is not giving much confidence. Because of that, you need two players who can come in the middle and handle the command."
