In a magical display of vintage brilliance, AB de Villiers left the crowd at the County Ground in Northampton amazed during the World Championship of Legends 2025 (WCL 2025) match between South Africa Champions and India Champions on Tuesday, July 22.
Batting first against India Champions, South Africa Champions captain AB de Villiers turned back the clock with an unbeaten 63 off just 30 balls. From scoops to powerful straight hits, the legendary batter seemed to be in total control, punishing the Indian bowlers with ease.

AB de Villiers' whirlwind knock helped South Africa post a daunting total of 208/6 on the board. India Champions, in reply, struggled to keep pace with the huge target and lost the WCL 2025 game by 88 runs in Northampton. But one moment during India’s chase truly stood out and went viral online.

In the ninth over of India’s chase, Yusuf Pathan tried to clear the boundary off Imran Tahir. The ball looked to go for four or even six over long-on. But AB de Villiers had other plans. Charging in from the deep, he sprinted, timed his slide perfectly, and caught the ball cleanly.
However, the great Proteas realized that his momentum would take him over the boundary rope, and then he showed incredible presence of mind. Just before touching the boundary cushions, De Villiers lobbed the ball mid-air to a nearby fielder, Sarel Erwee, who took the catch with a full-stretch dive, completing one of the most stunning relay efforts seen in the game.

Speaking about the match, South Africa Champions got a slow but steady start from Hashim Amla (22) and Jacques Rudolph (24) in the WCL 2025 clash. India fought back well in the middle overs as Sarel Erwee (15) and JP Duminy (16) struggled, and Yusuf Pathan bowled a tight spell, taking 2 wickets for just 26 runs. But then AB de Villiers took over.

He played an explosive unbeaten knock of 63 runs, hitting three boundaries and four sixes to change the pace of the game completely.
Towards the end, Morne van Wyk added 18 not out from just 5 balls. Morne and de Villiers smashed 19 runs in the final over to help South Africa reach 208/6.
For India, Piyush Chawla (2 for 31) was the standout bowler. Chasing the target, India Champions’ struggles started right from the first ball. Stuart Binny was the top scorer with 37*, while the other seven batters could not manage even double-digit scores.
For South Africa, Aaron Phangiso scalped three wickets to help his team win the game by 88 runs via the DLS method.
