Young Pakistan batter Mohammad Haris stunned everyone when he hit an astonishing shot with the back of his bat for a six during a match between Jaffna Kings and Kandy Falcons in the Lanka Premier League 2024. The match was played at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.

Haris came in to bat at no. 3 as Kandy Falcons had got off to a flying start. Playing just his sixth ball of the match, Haris decided to play an unreal scoop over the wicketkeeper's head. It was the last over of the powerplay in Kandy Falcons' innings.

The fast bowler Asitha Fernando bowled a low full toss on the stumps. Knowing that the player at third man was inside the circle, Haris decided to make use of fielding restrictions and made up his mind to play a reverse scoop. But surprisingly, he did not change the side of his bat and ended up hitting the ball so well that it crossed the boundary ropes.

Even Mohammad Haris was surprised with the shot and smiled. The bowler Asitha Fernando too did not believe what just happened and just ended up with a smile on his face. Such shots are quite rare in the cricketing world. However, Haris could not get a big score and was dismissed for 26 off 20 balls. He hit 1 four and 2 sixes during his knock.

Jaffna Kings defeat Kandy Falcons in a thrilling match

Coming to the match, it was a nail-biting encounter where Jaffna Kings trumped Kandy Falcons by 1 run. After being put in to bat first, Jaffna Kings scored 187-7 in 20 overs, thanks to a sublime century by wicketkeeper-opener Kusal Mendis. Mendis smashed an unbeaten 105 runs off 54 balls, which included 12 fours and 5 sixes.

Mendis' contribution was so huge in Jaffna Kings' innings as the next best score in the line-up was from Azmatullah Omarzai, who scored 26 off 13 balls while batting at No. 7. Omarzai's brisk cameo in the end pushed Kings to a big total. The spinners led the way for Kandy Falcons as left-arm spinner Chaturanga de Silva and off-spinner Ramesh Mendis shared 4 wickets between them for 32 runs.

Chasing a stiff target to win, Kandy Falcons got off to a flyer with 48 runs in the first 4 overs. Andre Fletcher was brilliant at the top with 38 off 21 balls while Mohammad Haris tried to maintain the momentum but was dismissed for just 26. Youngster Kamindu Mendis batted well for his 32 off 23 balls.

Skipper Wanindu Hasaranga and Angelo Mathews tried to keep up with the required run rate but could not get big scores due to Fabian Allen's brilliant spell of left-arm spin in the middle overs. Despite Ramesh Mendis a quickfire 30 in the end, Falcons fell tantalizingly short of the target.

Fabian Allen picked up 4-24 while off-spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth picked up 3-30 for Jaffna Kings in their respective spells.
