Akash Deep has yet again shone bright with the new ball, as the pacer provided a perfect start to India by dismissing Tom Latham in the very first over of New Zealand’s second innings in the ongoing third and final Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
After the Indian cricket team finished their innings at 263 on Day 2, Captain Rohit Sharma handed the ball to Akash Deep, and the pacer did a wonderful job for the hosts, as he cleaned up New Zealand captain Tom Latham after facing only four balls for just one run in the second session.
Watch: Akash Deep’s stunning delivery leaves Tom Latham stumped
Akash Deep has struck early, sending Tom Latham back to the pavilion with a beauty, which expertly made its way through the New Zealand skipper’s defense and dismantled his stumps. Actually, the ball made a late inward nip from outside off, and Latham failed to effectively align himself with the ball while attempting to drive.
With Latham holding the bat too tightly, the ball slipped through the sizable gap between the bat and pad. The result was a spectacular crash into the middle and off stumps, leaving New Zealand in a tough spot against India in the ongoing third and final Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Akash Deep also gave a aggressive send-off to the Kiwi batter.

However, after Latham’s wicket, Devon Conway showed some promise, but Washington Sundar yet again trapped the batter in his spin magic. Washington Sundar got the rid of Devon Conway with a sharp delivery that had a bit of extra bounce.
Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra falls cheaply at Wankhede
Conway found the ball catching the outer edge of his bat while attempting a firm defensive shot despite being half-forward to defend with hard hands. The ball sailed comfortably into the hands of Shubman Gill at second slip, who made no mistake with the brilliant catch.
Conway departed after scoring 22 off 47 balls, leading to New Zealand’s mini collapse, as Rachin Ravindra was also sent back to the pavilion by Ravichandran Ashwin for just four runs. The Kiwis are reeling at 45/3 after 15 overs against India in the ongoing Mumbai Test.
Rachin Ravindra’s struggle against off-spin in Asia is quite visible now. The New Zealander has so far faced 365 balls and made 193 runs at an average of 21.44 while throwing away his wicket nine times. Currently, New Zealand's score stands at 51/3 after 17 overs.
It's a funny game—Test cricket: Tom Latham
After winning the toss, Tom Latham stated, “Definitely focusing on this game. We spoke about it before the second Test in Pune. What we did in Bangalore was great, but we had to switch our focus quickly to that second test, and nothing changed. A new opportunity this game. It's a funny game—test cricket.
In Sri Lanka, I don't think we played all that badly. Unfortunately, you can just fall on the wrong side of the result. I don't think we have changed a lot in the last two weeks. We have tried to keep things simple and play our brand of cricket. We are hoping for more of the same this game. It's about adapting to the surface as quickly as possible.”
