Delhi Capitals are firmly on the backfoot in their ongoing game against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. Set a target of 181 runs, the Delhi-based outfit lost five wickets for just 65 runs inside 10 overs.

Not much has gone right for Delhi Capitals in the ongoing game, and things could have gone from bad to worse had Ashutosh Sharma been given a timed out. The right-handed batsman walked out to bat after Delhi Capitals lost their fifth wicket in the 10th over, and he was agonisingly close to being dismissed even before he could face a ball.

As the Delhi Capitals batsman Ashutosh Sharma took his time before taking the strike, a number of Mumbai Indians players, including their captain Hardik Pandya, appealed for a 'timed out' dismissal. Hardik asked the umpire, "appeal kiya toh out hai?" before slowly appealing and walking off.

According to the existing ICC rules, "After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within two minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed Out."

After the appeal, both the umpires had a brief chat before they eventually gave their decision in the batsman's favour. Ashutosh Sharma was fortunate to avoid the bizarre dismissal and would be looking to capitalise on it.

Watch the incident as Ashutosh Sharma escapes getting timed out:

Talking about the game, Delhi Capitals were on 103/5 at the end of the 14th over at the time of writing this report. Sameer Rizvi was batting on 39 while Ashutosh Sharma was unbeaten on 18. Earlier in the game, Mumbai Indians finished their innings on 180/5 thanks to Suryakumar Yadav's unbeaten 73-run knock.

Delhi Capitals need to win the ongoing game at any cost to stay alive in the competition. The match is a virtual quarterfinal for them. While a win will keep them alive, a defeat will end their campaign at the league stage.

On the other hand, Mumbai Indians will become the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs this season if they beat Delhi. In case the result goes Delhi's way, the final playoffs spot will be decided after their and Mumbai's last league games. Both teams will be facing the Punjab Kings in their last league game.
