International sports superstar Andre Russell retired from the shortest format of the game, as he called it day finally on Sunday on the 22nd of July, at Sabina Park in Jamaica. The West Indies fans had filled the stands to witness their hero for one last time in national colours.

In the final game of his career, Andre Russell scored a rapid 15-ball 36 with 6 sixes, as the entertainer smashed several humongous sixes. Once again, Australia put the West Indies to bat first, as the 37-year-old played a very crucial role, though the Windies ended up losing the game.

"Sabina Park, it was my dream as a kid to play here; it's reality now. It says if you dream, you can achieve. Thanks to all who came out to support me; it means a lot. Want more games to be played at this lovely venue, and I think we need to play more games in front of these good fans," Russell said in the mid-innings of the second T20I against Australia.

Before the start of the game, Russell was honoured in a lovely gesture of the 'guard of honour' by both the West Indies and the Australian players. Even the crowd praised the big all-rounder for his years of brilliance with the white-ball.

Russell had announced his retirement after the West Indies' humiliating collapse for 27

Andre Russell returned to the West Indies T20 side in recent years after back-to-back eye-catching performances in franchise cricket; however, he played only in the shortest format of the game for the Men from the Caribbean.

The West Indies, who played a three-match Test series against the Aussies on their own land, faced a huge blow in the final innings of the last Test. Chasing the target, the West Indies batters collapsed for a humiliating 27, as Mitchell Starc earned career-best figures and Scott Boland named himself among the elite to have picked up a hat-trick in Tests.

The West Indies fans were just recovering from his humiliating loss when Dre Russ announced his probable last game and retirement date, months before the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Russell was presented with a bat with guitar strings from the Jamaican Minister of Culture, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange.
