Former Pakistan skipper Babar Azam pulled off a sharp catch to dismiss Mitchell Marsh during the BBL 2025 match between the Sydney Sixers and the Perth Scorchers. Babar, making his BBL debut, took the catch to help the team get a breakthrough in the first over while defending the target in a rain-curtailed game.

The BBL opener in Perth was affected by bad weather, with a storm forcing a delayed start and the match being shortened to 11 overs per side. Notably, the Sydney Sixers recovered well after early setbacks. Jack Edwards scored 46 runs off just 21 balls and helped the Sixers post a competitive total of 113 for 5.

Babar Endures Disappointing BBL Debut with the Bat

Earlier in the match, Babar Azam had a disappointing outing with the bat in his BBL debut. The former Pakistan captain failed to settle and was dismissed cheaply after facing only a handful of deliveries.

Babar struggled to get going, managing just two runs before miscuing a pull shot off Brody Couch. The ball looped straight to a fielder at mid-on, ending his stay early at Optus Stadium.

Babar had arrived in the BBL as one of the tournament’s biggest names, with attention on him as he looks to regain form ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. However, his debut match didn’t provide the momentum he would have hoped for.

Babar Azam’s T20 Journey After Asia Cup Snub

Before the Big Bash League, Babar Azam featured in a T20I tri-series held in Pakistan, where he scored 127 runs across five outings.

Babar was not considered for selection for the 2025 Asia Cup in the UAE. The team progressed to the final of the tournament under Salman Ali Agha’s leadership. However, they suffered a loss to India in the summit clash.

The Asia Cup campaign proved challenging for Pakistan, especially against India. The two rivals met three times in Dubai, and Pakistan were beaten on each occasion.

Babar made his way back into the national T20I setup during the home series against South Africa in October 2025. He went past Rohit Sharma to become the leading run-scorer in international T20 cricket.
