Pakistan had reduced West Indies to 54-8 at one point and it seemed that the innings would fold up quickly. However, a 41-run partnership followed between the tailenders Gudakesh Motie and Kemar Roach to take West Indies close to the 100-run mark.
Interestingly, the last wicket partnership yielded 68 runs for West Indies to take them to a much more respectable 163 in their first innings. The last three batters in the West Indies line-up were the three highest run-getters for their team.
Gudakesh Motie shone with a fine half-century as he top-scored for his team with 55 off 87 deliveries. Kemar Roach scored 25 off 45 balls while Jomel Warrican struck 36 off 40 balls. It was an outstanding fightback from the visitors as they resisted a strong Pakistani spin-bowling attack on a turning surface.
Another low score for Babar Azam
While Babar Azam was quick to showcase his dance moves, he wasn't impressive with the bat as his slump in red-ball cricket continued. The 30-year-old was bowled by the left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie for just 1 off 5 deliveries.
Babar's score was the lowest among the top seven Pakistani batters in this innings. The right-hander has had a poor series as he has scored just 14 runs across the three innings so far at an average of 4.66.
Pakistan will hope Babar Azam to score big during the second innings as they aim to chase down a daunting total on a turning track. Babar's role will be key and it remains to be seen how he performs against a good quality spin attack.
West Indies tighten their grip
After getting all out for 163 in the first innings, West Indies bowlers made a terrific fightback and bowled out Pakistan for just 154 runs, thus taking a crucial 9-run lead. The visitors then batted superbly to post a 200-plus score in the second innings.
Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite led the way for West Indies and top-scored for his team with 52 off 74 balls. He received good support from Amir Jangoo, Tevin Imlach, and Kevin Sinclair who combined well to take West Indies to 244 in their second innings.
Pakistan have already lost two early wickets in their run-chase. They need a big innings from Babar Azam if they aim to win this match. Pakistan lead the two-match series 1-0 and are aiming for a clean sweep here.
