Australia’s left-arm spinner Cooper Connolly removed the dangerous South African batter Dewald Brevis just one run away from his half-century in the third and final ODI at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on Sunday, August 24.

However, it was not the way Cooper Connolly dismissed Dewald Brevis, but it was the young spinner’s celebration that stole the show during South Africa’s chase in the final ODI in Mackay. The viral incident unfolded on the second ball of the 18th over of the Proteas innings.

Connolly’s clever strategy worked to perfection as he pushed it full, left no room, and forced Brevis to play a big shot to clear the ropes. But standing tall in the deep, Cameron Green didn’t make any mistakes to give heartbreak to Brevis.

Green completed a brilliant catch to end Brevis’ stay. As Dewald Brevis fell just one short of a well-deserved fifty, Cooper Connolly set the stadium on fire with his bow-and-arrow celebration.

Cooper Connolly made the bow through his hands and fired his arrow into Brevis with raw passion when the young South African batting sensation was walking back to the dugout in frustration.

However, Brevis didn’t react to Connolly’s provoking celebration.

Later, Connolly picked up another big wicket, with Corbin Bosch falling to his clever plan. Bosch went for the shot, but the timing was not perfect. The ball flew flat and dangerously, but could not clear the fence. Marnus Labuschagne, who was stationed near the rope, timed his jump perfectly and pulled off a stunning overhead catch inside the boundary.

A few overs later, Connolly got his maiden ODI five-wicket haul by dismissing Keshav Maharaj. The Proteas spinner charged down the track to play aggressive shit, but Connolly was too smart, as he pulled the length back and spun it away.

Maharaj failed to connect with the ball, and Josh Inglis whipped off the bails to help the youngster get his maiden fifer. The moment the stumping was complete, Connolly broke into a beaming smile, stretched out his arms, and raised the ball proudly to the crowd to celebrate the milestone.

With this fifer, Connolly has scripted his name into the record books as he becomes the first Australian spinner to pick up a five-wicket haul against South Africa in ODI cricket.

Australia's record show deny South Africa a 3-0 whitewash

Well, Adam Zampa took the final wicket of Kwena Maphaka as Australia won the final ODI by a massive 276 runs to deny South Africa a 3-0 sweep at home. However, the Proteas side will take the trophy home, having won the first two ODIs against Australia.

Earlier, Australia had won the three-match T20I series with a 2-1 margin, and now South Africa clinched the three-match ODI series by the same margin. Notably, Cameron Green smashed 8 sixes in the final ODI, which is the second most by an Australian batter against South Africa.

The record for the most sixes against South Africa still belongs to Ricky Ponting, who hammered 9 sixes in Johannesburg back in 2006. Australia also smashed 18 sixes in the innings, which is also the second most sixes hit against South Africa, with England leading the chart with 19 sixes in Kimberley in 2023.
