Deepak Chahar Angry As Will Jacks And Karn Drop ABhishek Sharma Travis Head
PC: X

The star Mumbai Indians (MI) medium-pacer Deepak Chahar absolutely exploded in anger after his teammates Will Jacks and Karn Sharma made shocking fielding blunders in the 1st over of the innings against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

The errors made by Will Jacks and Karn Sharma on the field led to the explosive opening duo of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma surviving in the 33rd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, April 17.

Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma escape dismissal in the first over

Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match, looking at the dew coming in the second innings. Despite having two of the best new-ball bowlers in the team - Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult - MI have not found the desired success in the powerplay overs in IPL 2025.

That could have changed in the MI vs. SRH clash, but Will Jacks and Karn Sharma didn't let that happen as they were sloppy on the field. On the first ball of the match, Deepak Chahar bowled a length ball to Abhishek Sharma, who charged down the track to smash it inside out but only managed to get an outside edge.

The ball went flying towards Will Jacks at slips, and the English all-rounder tried to take the catch above his head, but was unsuccessful in his attempt. Looking at this, Deepak Chahar absolutely exploded in anger and was seen saying something furiously.

Meanwhile, Deepak Chahar produced yet another opportunity for a wicket on the fourth ball of the over, and this time Karn Sharma made a mess.

Deepak Chahar bowled a full delivery to Travis Head on the leg-stump, and the Australian batter flicked it towards mid-wicket. Karn Sharma, who was standing there, bent down and stopped it with his fingertips. Notably, a dive from Sharma would have created an opportunity for the wicket, but the leg-spinner was quite sloppy.

It was the second time in the history of the Indian Premier League that the Mumbai Indians had dropped two or more catches in the first over of an innings.

Most dropped catches in the first over of an innings (IPL):

3 MI vs CSK Wankhede 2013

2 MI vs SRH Wankhede 2025

I know how much thought Abhi and Trav put into their batting - Daniel Vettori

Speaking ahead of the match to the media, the Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori said that they are overdependent on Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, but denied claiming that they play "reckless" cricket. He elaborated:

"When you look at what we've been successful at in the powerplay, I feel like that Abhi and Travis have just been able to play their shots and deal with any ball. Because it's a reputation of aggressive play and all-out attack, when the dismissals do come, people surmise that it could be slightly reckless, but that's not the way I view it. It's like bowlers bowl well and you can't succeed all the time.

"I know how much thought Abhi and Trav put into their batting and how much they assess conditions, how much they assess bowlers. They know that when the ball's there, they obviously want to hit it, but at no stage do I feel like they're being reckless or anything like that, I think they're just very good players who have all the shots."

Daniel Vettori further said that the opposition teams have done good research on how to deal with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, and they have found some success. He said:

"People have done some good research around the amount of false shots they've had leading to wickets and it's a very high rate. Normally batsmen get away with those sorts of things. I think there's an element of luck."
