Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik claimed that MS Dhoni’s monster six off Yash Dayal in the final over helped RCB book a place in the IPL 2024 playoffs after they crushed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their final league game on Saturday, May 18.

Actually, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) needed 17 runs to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs while chasing 219 runs for victory at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Well, the veteran wicketkeeper batter started the final over by hitting the first ball for a six-off Dayal, leaving just 11 runs to be scored from the final five balls to make it to the top four.

But Dhoni's 110-meter six that hung the roof over the fine-leg fence did more damage to CSK than RCB, as the ball got lost, and the match officials had no choice but to hand the hosts a new one, Karthik said that's the point where CSK lost the race to the IPL 2024 playoffs.

Actually, the old ball had become quite wet due to the dew on the ground, affecting its condition. However, Dayal managed to gain better control with the new ball provided by the officials.

On the second delivery of the over, the RCB pacer got rid of the dangerous Dhoni to give CSK a major blow. In the following four deliveries, Dayal conceded only one run to secure a 27-run victory for RCB.

With this thrilling win over the defending champions CSK, RCB managed to book a place in the IPL 2024 playoffs on the basis of a superior net run rate. After the match, the RCB shared a clip on the microblogging site X where Karthik can be seen crediting Dhoni’s six for the team’s thrilling win over CSK.

Dinesh Karthik said in a video posted by RCB on X: “I thought the best thing to happen today was MS Dhoni hitting that 110M six outside the Chinnaswamy. It gave us a new ball which helped us, which was much better to bowl with. And… Yes. Yash, that was good bowling. You have a doubt, always bowl a high, hip-high, full-toss, on-leg stump. Wherever he is, it’s a good mantra to follow when the ball is wet.”

Even Virat Kohli also admitted that the new ball made a big difference for RCB against CSK, which was clearly seen in his reaction to Karthik's comment on Dhoni’s massive six in the video. However, CSK was knocked out of the ongoing IPL 2024 after their 27-run loss to RCB in Bengaluru.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Dhoni will return for the next IPL season, as he was struggling with a niggle and batted at the lower end of the order this season, but many are hoping that the former CSK skipper will play at least a couple of seasons in the world’s biggest T20 league.
