The Indian women’s cricket team gave a fitting farewell to veteran fast bowler Jhulan Goswami by a 16-run win in the low-scoring game, third and final ODI of the series at Lord’s on Saturday and whitewashed the series 3-0 against England.
India defended a low score of 169 with a brilliant bowling performance at Lord’s Cricket Ground. With England needing 17 runs to win, Charlotte Dean backed up a too much at the non-ending striker and Deepti took off the bails, leaving the batter in tears and everyone watching in shock.
The Indian bowlers took wickets at regular intervals. Renuka Singh and Jhulan Goswami bowled a brilliant opening spell to reduce England to 45/4. Rajeshwari Gayakwad added to England’s woes by striking twice in her first two overs. England’s keeper Amy Jones and Charlotte Dean were excellent to help England’s innings. After Jones was dismissed, Dean was left alone to chase down the target.
England were down to their last wicket, still needing more than 50 runs to win, but No 9 Charlie Deane single-handedly kept England close to the target. With the 21-year-old approaching his half-century, England’s victory looked a distinct possibility.
Deepti Sharma ran Dean out before delivering the ball at the non striker’s end in her delivery stride to seal India’s win.
Earlier in the innings, India collapsed to 29/4. Smriti Mandhana (50) and Deepti Sharma (68 not out) added a 58-run partnership for the fifth wicket to save the team from the collapse and it was an important half-century stand. However, once the partnership was broken, India lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 169 in 45.4 overs.

The dismissal shocked the England dressing room. The On field umpires forwarded the decision to the third umpire. Dean broke down in tears when the dismissal was confirmed, but she quickly shook hands with the Indians after the third umpire’s verdict.
Indian skipper, Harmanpreet expressed surprise that during the presentation ceremony she was only asked about the last wicket and not the other nine. To be honest, I expected you to inquire about all ten wickets, they are not easy to pick up. It’s part of the game; We have done nothing new. It shows your understanding of what the batters are doing. I support my players as she has not broken any rules.
