Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen on the Kapil Sharma Show alongside Rishabh Pant, Abhishek Sharma, and Yuzvendra Chahal.

While conversing with the show's host, Gambhir's joking remark about Rohit Sharma has taken a serious turn as Indian fans fume in rage, considering it evil.

On the show, host Kapil Sharma, in his usual way, asked Rishabh Pant as to who is the 'jethani-like' player in the Indian setup, meaning who is the one who often imposes their seniority on fellow players.

To this, Rishabh Pant light-heartedly remarked that 'Rohit Sharma was one such player who used to order his fellow teammates a lot.'

Gautam Gambhir blamed as a conspirator behind Rohit Sharma's retirement call

After this statement, Gambhir, while looking at Navjot Singh Sidhu, said "Ab toh retire ho gaya". While saying this, Gambhir giggled loudly.

Some critics on social media have named this act to be evil, stating that Gambhir's smile during the discussion of Rohit's retirement is indicative of his ill intent that he forced Rohit Sharma to retire.

Previously, just after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format of the game, social media was flooded with the notion that Gambhir was the prime conspirator behind Rohit's sudden call to leave the game.

However, neither of those claims had any proof, nor did the former veteran Rohit Sharma or coach Gautam Gambhir give any statement either supporting or disapproving of those claims.

Gautam Gambhir wins ICC tournament within months of appointment

Indian coach Gautam Gambhir was appointed for the role of Indian coach after Rahul Dravid stepped down post the title win in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Just then, Gautam Gambhir had won the IPL title with Kolkata Knight Riders as their coach.

Gambhir, appointed as the head coach, received initial criticism as he could not achieve the desired success in the ODI and Test formats. After a long time, India lost an ODI series and several Test series.

However, keeping these aside, Gambhir bounced back when he led India to a win in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, the first ICC title under his tenure.

Gambhir's Washington Sundar move pays off at Edgbaston

Gautam Gambhir has often been known for his unorthodox moves and staunch nature. This time around as well, Gambhir has implemented every premeditated plan of his. He rested Jasprit Bumrah for the Edgbaston Test and also excluded Shardul Thakur from the side.

However, though the reports suggested a probable selection of Kuldeep Yadav, Gambhir stood by his own tactics and included Washington Sundar to strengthen India's lower-order batting for the second test.

Sundar contributed significantly with the bat, not only adding runs at the bottom but also building onto a firm 7th wicket partnership with skipper Shubman Gill.
