However, the Men in Blue bounced back in the second game itself and won the Boxing-Day Test in Melbourne, levelling the series 1-1.

The national cricket team emerged as one of the most defiant sides in their history as they forced Australia to kneel and commit errors in the final two Tests of the series at Sydney and Brisbane. In the game at Sydney, the Kangaroos were on the front foot to win the game but a sturdy batting performance from Rishabh Pant, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Hanuma Vihari helped the national side salvage a draw.
