The statement of to '49 problems' is related to the famous innings of April 23, 2017, when RCB were shot out for just 49 against KKR on the same ground. It is still the lowest score by a team ever in the history of the Indian Premier League.
What happened on April 23, 2017?
It was a low-scoring game between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru played at Eden Gardens. RCB opted to field first and bowled KKR out for just 131 in the final over of the innings.
Sunil Narine provided his team with a rollicking start but was dismissed for a quickfire 34 off 17 balls. However, none of the other batters could even reach the 20-run mark. Interestingly, Manish Pandey also played this match for KKR and scored 15.
RCB seemed favorites to win the match KKR's fast bowlers had other ideas. On a pitch providing enough assistance for the seamers, KKR's four fast bowlers - Nathan Coulter-Nile, Umesh Yadav, Chris Woakes, and Colin de Grandhomme - dismantled the opposition for just 49
The domination of these four quicks was such that no spinner was required to bowl. RCB had high-quality batters like Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, and AB de Villiers in their Playing XI but none of them could even reach the double-digit mark. In fact, none of the RCB batters reached the double-digit mark on this day.
Kohli was dismissed for a golden duck with Manish Pandey snaffling up the catch at second slip off the bowling of Coulter-Nile, who finished with 3-21 in three overs. Chris Woakes and Colin de Grandhomme also finished with three wickets each while Umesh Yadav picked up the solitary wicket.
Andy Flower's mind games
Before this game, RCB head coach Andy Flower also tried to play some mind games while doing the press conference on the match eve. While responding to a reporter's question, Flower called it "daunting" for KKR to beat RCB.
Both the teams have played 34 matches against each other in IPL and KKR are well ahead with 20 wins. RCB, on the other hand, have won 14 matches so far and will look to close in. The last time RCB defeated KKR was three years ago in 2022.
