England's senior batter Joe Root was seen crying on live television as his team was on the brink of a huge upset in the Champions Trophy 2025. A few balls later, England lost the match to a spirited Afghanistan side to be knocked out of the tournament.
While the penultimate over of the match was going on, Joe Root was sitting alongside his captain Jos Buttler in England's dressing room. Both the faces were looking utterly disappointed as England had already lost nine wickets and required 13 off 7 balls to win.
Root was emotional as can be seen through his face. Both Root and Buttler are the two seniormost players in the England team and a vital part of their white-ball plans. However, they couldn't take England over the line this time.

It was a must-win game for both the teams and Afghanistan came out on top despite a magnificent hundred from Joe Root. Root had already taken his team past the finish line almost single-handedly with an outstanding batting performance.
However, he was dismissed in the 46th over of the match to land a big blow to England's hopes. England's lower-order batters Jamie Overton and Jofra Archer kept their team in the game but lost their wickets at crucial times to hand Afghanistan a crucial win.
Joe Root carries England's hopes
A no. of England batters like Ben Duckett, Jos Buttler, and Harry Brook got starts but couldn't convert them into big ones. England required their captain Buttler to play a match-winning knock here but he again gave away his wicket after a strong start.
Root was the only batter who carried his team's hopes with a fine knock of 120 off 111 balls. He struck 11 fours and 1 six during his knock. It was a typical innings from Joe Root who rotated the strike constantly without taking too many risks.
He played some audacious shots which included the reverse-sweeps and reverse-ramps over the wicketkeeper's head. Azmatullah Omarzai picked up the last wicket of the match to finish with 5-58 and take his team to a memorable victory.
Memorable knock for Ibrahim Zadran
Earlier, Afghanistan batted first after winning the toss but started poorly. Jofra Archer rattled through their top order with some aggressive fast bowling.
However, Ibrahim Zadran and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi steadied the innings with a much-needed partnership. Shahidi got out but Zadran carried on playing a memorable knock.
He got good support from Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi who played fiery cameos down the order. Ibrahim struck a career-best 177 off only 146 balls with 12 fours and 6 sixes to take Afghanistan past the 300-run mark.
Afghanistan will play Australia next in a must-win game. Meanwhile, England are out of the tournament and will play South Africa in their final game of the tournament.
