Tristan Stubbs replaced Temba Bavuma in South Africa XI

The young batter Tristan Stubbs got a chance to feature in the South Africa playing XI after skipper Temba Bavuma got ruled out of the match against the English team.

Temba Bavuma was unavailable for the match due to an illness, and in his place, Aiden Markram took over the captaincy before being injured mid-way through the match and Heinrich Klaasen being named stand-in skipper. Notably, Klaasen came into the playing XI as a replacement for sick Tony de Zorzi after recovering from an injury.

Coming back to Stubbs, the experiment to make him open the innings failed badly as he was dismissed in the 3rd over itself for a 5-ball duck by Jofra Archer.

On the 1st ball of the over, Jofra Archer bowled a back-of-a-length delivery to the youngster on a tight line in the channel.

Stubbs tried to dab it down to deep third to get off the mark, but he only managed to reflect the ball back into the stumps. Jofra Archer barely celebrated the wicket and the Proteas lost their first wicket for 11 runs.

What happened in the previous ICC Champions Trophy match between England and South Africa?

England hammered South Africa by 7 wickets in their previous ICC Champions Trophy match, which was the semi-final of the 2013 edition of the competition at The Oval.

The Proteas delivered a poor performance with the bat and continued their trend of failing to deliver on a big stage. They only managed 175 runs before being bowled out.

England’s decision to bowl first in the match proved right immediately as James Anderson struck in the opening over, trapping Colin Ingram lbw for a duck.

Hashim Amla soon followed, edging behind off Steven Finn. South Africa never recovered from the early blows, as Stuart Broad and James Tredwell kept up the pressure. AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, and Faf du Plessis all failed to make an impact, and by the 23rd over, the Proteas were reeling at 80 for 8.

A late fightback from David Miller (56*) and Rory Kleinveldt (43) helped South Africa in recovery as their ninth-wicket partnership of 95 dragged South Africa to 175.

For England, Tredwell was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of 3 for 19, while Broad and Anderson bagged three and two wickets, respectively.

Chasing a modest target, England lost Alastair Cook (6) and Ian Bell (20) early, but Jonathan Trott played a great knock of unbeaten 82 runs off 84 balls to guide England home comfortably.
