The 34-year-old star England National Cricket Team batter Jos Buttler looked teary-eyed after a miserable end to his stint as the skipper in international cricket.

Jos Buttler played his last match as the skipper of the England National Cricket Team on Saturday, March 1, at the National Stadium in Karachi against the South Africa National Cricket Team.

Jos Buttler ends captaincy stint on a low

After England performed poorly in three back-to-back ICC events, Jos Buttler was forced to relinquish the captaincy. He made the decision official ahead of England's last ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match against the Proteas.

The T20 World Cup-winning skipper would've been hoping to finish on a high, but South Africa ruined his plans with a dominant performance in Karachi.

Batting first, England were bowled out for 179 runs as the Proteas bowlers did a great job and while defending the score, the English bowlers looked poor and allowed South Africa to finish off the run-chase in 29.1 overs to register a 7-wicket win with 125 balls remaining.

With this, England crashed out of the competition without winning a match in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and becoming the fourth team in the tournament's history after Zimbabwe, West Indies, and Pakistan to finish the campaign winless.

Notably, they have lost 10 of the 11 international matches in 2025. Also, they have lost their last seven men's ODIs, which is their longest losing streak in the format since losing 11 in a row in 2000-01.

Meanwhile, after the match, as the players of both teams were shaking hands and were about to leave the field, the camera panned towards Jos Buttler, who looked quite emotional and had tears in his eyes.

Overall, Buttler led England in 45 ODI matches, winning 18 and losing 26 matches, with one match ending in no result. Of the 14 England captains who have led in at least 15 ODIs, Buttler's win-loss ratio is the second-lowest.

Harry Brook is the obvious candidate to take over - Nasser Hussain

England will now be looking for a new skipper and the designated vice-captain Harry Brook, who has not been in good form, looks like an ideal successor to Buttler.

Former English skipper Nasser Hussain backed Harry Brook to become England's white-ball skipper as he feels the team management will look forward and avoid appointing a stop-gap captain. He elaborated:

"Harry Brook is the obvious candidate to take over. He did it at the end of the summer against Australia. He's the obvious one with the amount of important cricket coming up for England.

"Do you want to put that pressure on a young man who's got an India series at home, an Ashes away and then a World Cup T20 in India and Sri Lanka? Or do you go to a stopgap, James Vince, Sam Billings, Lewis Gregory, seasoned, domestic, franchise captains to just do it for a while?

"I think personally England don't look back, they look forward. If they think Brook is the next captain, they go to him as soon as possible so he can start learning about being captain."
