Kusal Mendis' promising knock in the ongoing Eliminator between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans came to an end in a disappointing manner.

The Sri Lanka star was not a part of the original Gujarat Titans squad but was signed as a replacement. With Jos Buttler leaving before the playoffs because of the national team duties, the Gujarat-based outfit signed Kusal Mendis as a replacement.

Even though Gujarat Titans had other wicketkeeping options such as Anuj Rawat and Kumar Kushagra, they handed Kusal Mendis a debut in the do-or-die Eliminator against Mumbai Indians.

Gujarat fighting hard

The right-handed batsman had to walk out to bat in the very first over after Trent Boult dismissed Titans skipper Shubman Gill for just 1. Playing his first IPL game, Kusal Mendis looked in good touch from the start as he raced away to 20 runs off just 9 balls with the help of two sixes and a four.

However, his promising knock ended in a bizarre fashion as he was out hit wicket. On the second ball of the 7th over bowled by Mitchell Santner, Mendis played a pull shot towards deep mid-wicket but took his back leg too deep and ended up hitting the stumps. After breaking the stumps, he also fell flat on his back as he lost his balance completely.

Talking about the game, Gujarat Titans have made a good start with the bat in their pursuit of 229 runs. They were on 93/2 in the 9th over at the time of writing this report. In-form Sai Sudharsan was batting on 60 while Washington Sundar was unbeaten on 11.

Earlier in the match, Mumbai Indians finished their innings on 228/5 thanks to Rohit Sharma's brilliant 81-run knock. The winner of the ongoing game will qualify for the second qualifier against Punjab Kings.
