While Sri Lanka ended up conceding a big total against India in the ongoing first T20I in Pallekele, their star pacer Matheesha Pathirana managed to make a big impact.
The right-arm pacer did not start the game on the best of notes as he conceded 13 runs in his first over. However, he bounced back in style and went on to finish the innings with figures of 4 for 40. In his second over, Matheesha Pathirana sent back the dangerous Suryakumar Yadav to give Sri Lanka a much-needed breakthrough.
In his third over, he clean bowled Hardik Pandya with a brilliant yorker that was clocked at 151kmph. And he ended his spell by taking one more big wicket. Bowling the 19th over of the innings and his last over, Matheesha Pathirana castled Rishabh Pant as well and denied him a fifty as the India wicketkeeper-batsman departed for 49.
While the fast bowler cleaned up Pandya with a thunderbolt, he outfoxed Pant with a slower delivery. On the fifth ball of the 19th over, he bowled the slower delivery, and Pant was completely beaten while trying to play a big shot. Pant completely failed to read the delivery and ended up playing too early as the ball went on to crash into the off stump.

Pant departed after scoring 49 runs off 33 balls with the help of 6 fours and a six. Talking about the game, India finished their innings on 213/7 in 20 overs after Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Men in Blue were off to a good start with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill adding 74 runs for the first wicket.
Sri Lanka then hit back by dismissing both the openers on successive deliveries. However, Suryakumar came up with a captain's knock and scored a whirlwind fifty to put India in the driver's seat again. The right-handed batsman departed after scoring 58 runs from just 26 balls.
