India were dealt with a huge blow during the dying stages of Day 1 of the third Test between India and New Zealand in Mumbai as Virat Kohli was run out. It was an unusual dismissal for Kohli who is usually quick but could not judge the single well this time.

During the 19th over of India's innings, Kohli pushed a ball from the left-arm spinner Rachin Ravindra towards mid-on and immediately set off for a run. However, Matt Henry was quick to pick up the ball and threw it in one motion.

Virat Kohli tried his best to reach the crease but even a dive could not save him. The third umpire gave him out after he was found short of the crease by a few inches. It was a shocker at the end of the day for India.

It was a poor judgemental call from Virat Kohli to call for a run as the fielder was too close to the stumps at the non-striker's end. Kohli tried hard but was found well short of his crease.

His dismissal silence the crowd at Wankhede Stadium, who had come to see him bat. However, the 35-year-old was dismissed for just 4 off 6 balls. Kohli looked in good touch in this innings and even struck a boundary but his wait for a big knock continues.

New Zealand players were ecstatic as soon as the ball hit the stumps and were convinced that Kohli had been run out. They proved to be right in the end, resulting in the third wicket in quick succession for India.

Virat Kohli's shocking Test season continues

Virat Kohli is having a shocking season with the bat so far. He registered disappointing scores against Bangladesh but was expected to get back amongst the runs in this series.

However, he has scored just 92 runs in five innings of the ongoing Test series at an average of 18.40. Out of these 92 runs, he scored 70 in one innings.

The last 30 minutes of the day were full of action as India lost a firm grip on the game. With Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill at the crease, the batters looked set to go to the stumps unscathed.

India lose the plot at the end of Day 1

However, a poor shot from Jaiswal started a collapse that has put India slightly on the backfoot going into the second day. Mohammed Siraj arrived as the night-watchman after the dismissal of Jaiswal but was dismissed for a golden duck.

India lost 3 wickets for the last 6 runs of the day as New Zealand came back into the game. The visitors will be looking to make inroads into the Indian batting line-up on Day2.

On the other hand, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant will have a big task in hand to form a partnership. With Sarfaraz and Jadeja still to come, India will believe that they still have the batting to go into the lead.
