The Indian spinner unleashed his inner powerhouse with a colossal six off Santner in the 5th ball of the 44th over in Pune. Santner’s stunning six-wicket haul has put New Zealand in the commanding position in the ongoing second Test against India. The seasoned spinner was unstoppable, leaving India reeling in their own backyard, as the tourists have set the stage for a potential upset in Pune.
Mitchell Santner's maiden 5-wicket haul put New Zealand on the brink of making history in India
Meanwhile, Mitchell Santner has achieved his first-ever five-wicket haul in Test cricket, while only his second in first-class cricket. His first five-wicket haul came for Northern Districts against Central Districts, when he took 5 for 51 in Mount Maunganui during the 2022/23 season.
Santner added one more to his tally by dismissing Indian pacesetter Jasprit Bumrah for a three-ball duck, as he finished with the remarkable figures of 7/53 to bowl India out for just 156 runs in the ongoing second Test of the three-match Test series at the MCA Stadium in Pune.
With this remarkable outing, Santner became the only third bowler to have registered the best bowling figures in India in Test cricket after Ajaz Patel (10/119 in 2021) and Richard Hadlee Wellington (7/23 in 1976). Undoubtedly, it was a day to remember for life for the Kiwi star.
New Zealand brilliantly outsmarted India in Pune
Well, India is known for their dominance over visiting teams, but they struggled against Santner’s spin, collapsing within just a session and a half in Pune. So, hats off to New Zealand and the left-arm spinner for outsmarting and out-bowling India in their own conditions.
India lost six wickets in the opening session and the remaining in the next session at the MCA Stadium. Speaking about India’s innings, Ravindra Jadeja’s 38 runs were the highest score for the tourists, followed by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 30 and Shubman Gill’s 30 against New Zealand.
Only Sarfaraz Khan (11), Rishabh Pant (18), and Washington Sundar (18*) could go past the 10-run mark against New Zealand in the ongoing second Test match in Pune.
