In a bizarre moment, Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi became the victim of an unfortunate run-out in their do-or-die group match against Australia in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on Friday, February 28, at the Gaddafi Cricket Stadium in Lahore.
Australian pacer Spencer Johnson bowled a short delivery down the leg side, which the wicketkeeper Josh Inglis failed to collect cleanly, deflecting the ball to his left. This prompted Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi to take a quick bye, but the all-rounder was sent back midway.

And that’s where the Australian players showed great presence of mind, as Josh Inglis quickly threw the ball towards the stumps, and Spencer Johnson reacted sharply, collecting it and knocking down the bails. Mohammad Nabi was caught short of his crease, gifting Australia an easy wicket.

Mohammad Nabi returned back to the pavelion aftter playing only one delivery for one run against Australia in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 match in Lahore. Notably, Mohammad Nabi is the oldest player participating the Champions Trophy at 40.
Speaking about this crucial match, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and opted to bat first against Australia in their final group-stage match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. This match is very important for the Afghan side, as a victory against the two-time champions will secure them a spot in the semi-finals.
After a disappointing start with a heavy defeat to South Africa, Afghanistan staged a remarkable comeback, as they pulled off a thrilling eight-run win over England, knocking the 2019 World Cup champions out of the tournament. This was their second triumph over England in the ICC event, following their memorable 69-run victory in the 2023 World Cup in India.
Sediqullah Atal shines with the bat against Australia
Now, with their semifinal hopes hanging in the balance, Afghanistan batters have done a fantastic job to give their bowlers enough runs to pull off another sensational victory in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
They have been restricted by the Australians for 273 in Lahore. The Afghan side managed to post the challenging target on the back of stunning fifties from Sediqullah Atal (85 runs off 95 balls) and Azmatullah Omarzai (67 runs off 63 balls) against the Kangaroos.
Sediqullah was involved in the two 60+ partnerships with Ibrahim Zadran (22) and Hashmatullah Shahidi (20) at the Gaddafi Cricket Stadium in Lahore. For Australia, Spencer Johnson and Adam Zampa each snared two wickets against Afghanistan.
Hasmatullah Shahidi hopes Afghan spinners would make the most of Lahore surface
Before the start of the match, Afghan captain Hasmatullah Shahidi said at the toss, “We will bat first because the wickets look good, it's a used pitch, England and Australia already played on this pitch, so it will slow down in the second half, and hopefully, our spinners will come into play. We were happy with the performance in our last game; we also have made plans against Australia, and hopefully, we can rectify the mistakes we made against England.”
Notably, Australia and Afghanistan play against each other in the only ICC events. Actually, Cricket Australia refused to play Afghanistan in a bilateral series due to the humanitarian crisis in the country under Taliban governance. Australia is against the treatment of girls and women by the Taliban.
