Veteran Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim, on Wednesday (December 6), lost his wicket on day one of the ongoing second Test against New Zealand in a bizarre manner. The former Bangladesh captain became the first-ever player from his country to be given out for obstructing the field.

The umpire adjudged Mushfiqur Rahim out after he handled the ball. The incident took place in the 41st over of Bangladesh’s first innings when the right-handed batsman was facing New Zealand fast-bowler Kyle Jamieson. On the fourth ball of the over, he defended the ball from the right-arm pacer before realizing that the ball could have headed onto his stumps.

While players usually use their shoes or body to stop the ball in such a scenario, Mushfiqur Rahim bizarrely decided to use his hand to shove the ball away. The New Zealand fielders appealed immediately for obstructing the field dismissal and the umpires eventually gave their decision in the bowling team’s favor.

Mushfiqur Rahim had tried to handle the ball before the dismissal too. He did that in the very first over of the second session of the game. On the second ball of the 29th over bowled by Tim Southee, he defended the ball with soft hands and the ball came quite close to hitting the stumps. Mushfiqur Rahim tried to handle the ball but could not make any contact and survived.

Watch Mushfiqur Rahim’s bizarre dismissal:

Overall, he became the eighth cricketer in Tests to be given out for obstructing the field. Mushfiqur Rahim departed after scoring 35 runs with the help of 3 fours and a six. Batting first, Bangladesh started poorly and were reeling at 47 for 4 before Rahim and Shahadat Hossain steadied the ship with a 57-run stand.

19 runs after Rahim’s departure, Hossain was dismissed by Glenn Phillips for 31. At the time of writing this report, Bangladesh were on 128 for 6. The hosts are leading the series after winning the first Test.
