Afghanistan's historic win knocks Australia out

After winning the toss and batting first, Afghanistan got off to a sedate start but their openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran couldn't increase the scoring rate. Gurbaz contributed with 43 off 55 balls.

Despite having a solid foundation, the middle order stumbled as they were dismissed while trying to hit big shots. Skipper Rashid Khan smashed an unbeaten 19 off just 10 balls to take Afghanistan to a respectable total of 115.

Chasing a modest target of 116, Bangladesh's top order couldn't hold the might of Afghanistan's opening bowlers, who have been good throughout the tournament. Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazalhaq Farooqi were brilliant in the opening spell and they reduced Bangladesh to 32-3.

Bangladesh's middle order couldn't contribute much as Litton Das held the fort from one end. Das remained unbeaten on 54 off 49 balls as the team was all out for 105 in 17.5 overs. Naveen-ul-Haq and Rashid Khan picked up 4 wickets each to dismantle Bangladesh's batting order.

With Afghanistan's win, Australia have been knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024. In the earlier match, Australia were defeated by 24 runs, which meant they had to rely on Bangladesh's performance to qualify for the semi-finals.

Both the semi-final fixtures have been decided now. Afghanistan will face South Africa on June 27 at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad in the first semi-final. Meanwhile, the second semi-final will be a repeat of the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final between India and England. The match will be played at Providence Stadium, Guyana on June 27.
