Afghanistan National Cricket Team captain Rashid Khan’s brain-fade moment took social media by storm. The jaw-dropping moment unfolded in the 18th over of Afghanistan's innings against Sri Lanka in the final Group B match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2025 on September 18 at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Rashid Khan was bowled unexpectedly and dramatically by Nuwan Thushara. The Sri Lankan bowler bowled a clever slower yorker, reminiscent of legendary Lasith Malinga, aimed at the middle stump, and caught Rashid off guard. Rashid went for a sweep but completely missed.

Meanwhile, Rashid Khan suffered a heartbreak in the middle overs. In the 15th over, the Afghanistan captain pulled off a stunning diving catch at deep mid-wicket, removing Charith Asalanka for 17 runs off 12 balls. Noor Ahmad bowled a short delivery, and Asalanka tried to pull it but mistimed the shot.

Rashid sprinted forward and managed to hold onto the ball with both hands, but he slipped during the process. The celebration was short-lived. In the very next over, Rashid suffered an injury while bowling and had to leave the field, and Sri Lanka chased down the target with 8 balls to spare.

With a six-wicket victory, Sri Lanka made it to the Super 4s of the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, eliminating Afghanistan from the tournament. From Group B, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh qualified for the Super 4s, while India and Pakistan progressed to the next round from Group A in the tournament.

Rashid Khan reflects on Afghanistan's Asia Cup 2025 exit after a six-wicket loss to Sri Lanka

After the match, Rashid lamented that Afghanistan crashed out of the Asia Cup 2025, as they were hoping to at least qualify for the Super 4s. The star spinner felt Afghanistan didn’t deliver its best with both bat and ball against Sri Lanka. He also mentioned the Abu Dhabi pitch was tough for bowling.

Rashid Khan said at the post-match presentation, “The way we finished it was so special. To hit 5 sixes was unbelievable. We bowled not as well as we should have. It was pretty hard on that track and It wasn't the typical Abu Dhabi wicket; it was possible to chase 170-180.

We had a great chance to chase 150 odd in the last game. But that's the nature of T20 cricket. We had great preparation for this. We had worked hard and trained hard; we made it to the semis of the T20 WC and we at least thought of making it to the next round here.”
