Vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who is usually known for his bold shots and lively stump-mic comments, took on the role of mentor during Day 1 of the first Test between India and England at the Headingley Stadium in Leeds on Friday, June 20.
Instead of thrilling with just his bat, Rishabh Pant showed a mature side as the wicketkeeper-batter guided his captain Shubman Gill during a crucial moment late on Day 1 of the ongoing five-match Test series opener against England at the Headingley Stadium.
Rishabh Pant surprises fans with on-field advice to Shubman Gill
The moving scene unfolded in the final session of Day 1. England’s young spinner Shoaib Bashir was bowling, and Shubman Gill looked keen to accelerate. After stepping out and driving a fuller delivery straight to short cover, Gill seemed ready to take more chances.
But Rishabh Pant, at the non-striker’s end, quickly stepped in with a warning. The Indian vice-captain advised the captain to keep the ball down while attacking, pointing out that the ball had bounced and could have been caught. He asked Gill to play smart, not just aggressive cricket.
This shift in Rishabh Pant’s approach stunned many, as the left-handed batter is known for smashing sixes and taking risks, but he is now asking for carefulness.
Even the broadcaster shared the clip on its social media handle with the caption: “Warning: When @RishabhPant17's on strike, expect some advice and plenty of chatter between the wickets! 😜🎙️.” Now, the clip of the moment is all over the internet.

Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal shine on Day 1
Well, the fans didn’t miss out on Rishabh Pant’s natural flair either. In the very last over of the day, with Chris Woakes bowling, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter stepped out and hammered a six over deep square leg, finishing the day unbeaten on a stylish 65.
On the other hand, Shubman Gill had a dream start to his Test captaincy. He remained not out on 127, anchoring the innings with calm and confidence. Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal gave India a strong start with a brilliant 101. The Indian opener’s century set the tone for the innings.
Jaiswal and Gill put on a 129-run partnership for the second wicket. After Jaiswal’s dismissal, Pant walked in and added another 138 runs with Gill, taking India to a dominant position of 359/3 at stumps on Day 1 in the ongoing first Test against England at Headingley.

Notably, this was only the third instance when two Indian batters smashed centuries on Day 1 of a Test match. Before Gill and Jaiswal, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag both scored centuries against South Africa back in 2001 in Bloemfontein, and then Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara smashed hundreds in Galle back in 2017.
Additionally, this was the fifth time when India crossed the 300-run mark on the opening day in a Test match. The previous instances were 372/7 vs. South Africa (2001), 356/2 vs. Pakistan (2004), 399/3 vs. Sri Lanka (2017), 302/4 vs. West Indies (2016), and 359/3 vs. England (2025).
