It has been a long time since Rohit Sharma has turned out for Team India in any format of the game.
Sharma’s last International appearance came way back in February 2020 during the T20I series in New Zealand, post which an injury ruled him out of the ODI and Test series.
He was slated to make his comeback during the home ODI series against South Africa in March but the rubber was postponed due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Then, to make matters worse, Rohit picked up an injury during the IPL, leading to him being omitted from all the three squads for the Australian tour.
A major furor ensued when hours after the announcement of the squad, Rohit turned out for a practice session in MI nets.
He made a comeback to the Mumbai Indians playing 11 after missing a few games and even scored a half-century in the final against Delhi Capitals. Rohit was subsequently added to the Test squad but with his father getting diagnosed with Covid and him needing some time to work on his injury at the NCA, he returned back to Mumbai even as the entire squad traveled to Australia.
However, there was no clarity regarding Rohit’s injury status and also on his departure to Australia. The latter assumed great importance since Australia mandated a 14-day hard quarantine (without training) for anyone traveling to their shores.
Indian captain Virat Kohli also lamented on the lack of clarity on the eve of the ODI series, post which the BCCI released a statement that said that Rohit will undergo another test at the NCA on December 11, and depending on the results, a decision will be taken, effectively ruling him out from the first two Tests.
Rohit subsequently passed the fitness test and within a few days boarded a flight to Australia where he immediately went into 14-day isolation in Sydney.
Rohit is expected to slot-in back in the playing 11 and it will be interesting to see who makes way for the ‘Hitman’.
