Sam Curran shines with bat against Punjab Kings

Curran, who is the former captain of the Punjab Kings, was unable to perform well in his first three matches of the Indian Premier League 2025.

He registered scores of 4, 8, and 9 against the Mumbai Indians (MI), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Also, with the ball, he went wicketless.

However, Sam Curran made sure he showcased his true potential in the match against his former team Punjab Kings. He came out to bat at No.3 after the dismissal of Shaik Rasheed and played an attacking brand of cricket.

After batting brilliantly for a while during his stay in the middle, Sam Curran completed his half-century in the 15th over. He hit a delivery from Azmatullah Omarzai down the ground and took a double to reach the milestone off 30 balls.

Sam Curran was absolutely delighted on reaching the half-century milestone and raised his bat to acknowledge the applause and then signaled someone to call him and swung his bat aggressively to celebrate.

Daren Ganga and Ambati Rayudu highlight the importance of the CSK vs PBKS match for both teams

In an interaction on ESPNCricinfo ahead of the match, Daren Ganga said that the 49th match of IPL 2025 would be very important for PBKS and backed them to make it to the top four. He elaborated:

"Yeah, it will be big points for them and I think it will be a sort of justification as to how they can sustain what we saw from the early part of the season with this Punjab Kings team. You look at that side and you think that they've gained a lot in what their openers have done.

"Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran, they've really set the tone for their season alongside their skipper, a new skipper who has been able to balance that role as a leader and that role as a top order batter in that side. It's not an easy role to carry, especially in a complement of players where you're unfamiliar with them. I think their biggest concern is how will they get the Australian overseas players to fire and to sort of supplement what they've already achieved.

"From a bowling point of view, it's great that they have Yuzi Chahal coming into form. I think that's a big plus for them. So I think it's more positives than negatives and I expect that they will sustain and go on to qualify in the top four."

Meanwhile, Ambati Rayudu said that even though the Chennai Super Kings have struggled at home, it is the right time for them to play at Chepauk. He explained:

"Absolutely. I mean, this is the best time to play CSK at Chepauk, if you really think about that. And I feel, you know, they have come into their own just a little bit in the previous game with Brevis batting in the middle order and also Ayush Mhatre.

"I think these two guys have shown the other batters how to go about in the innings. And I feel they're getting slightly better as the season progresses. And also their fast bowling looks far better in terms of Khaleel and Kamboj. But Pathirana is struggling big time. I think he's someone that needs to really step up and get back into form if CSK, you know, needs to really play a good game and also come close to beating Punjab."
