Team India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson fooled former Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka with a fake run-out during the final Super Four match of the Asia Cup 2025. While Sri Lanka had already been eliminated before the game, the moment denied them a consolation victory in the high-octane clash.

India defeated Sri Lanka in a thrilling Super Over in Dubai on Friday, September 26. Sri Lanka managed to score 202-5 while chasing 203 runs, forcing the match into a Super Over. Arshdeep Singh conceded just two runs, and Suryakumar Yadav, along with Shubman Gill, sealed the victory for the Men in Blue.

Wicketkeeper Sanju Samson came close to the stumps and seemed to have collected the ball. Fearing a run-out, Shanaka dived desperately. A third run was possible, but Shanaka, still recovering from his dive, could not take advantage of it.

Shanaka was unaware that there was a chance for a third run. Meanwhile, Janith Liyanage attempted to take the third, but the ball reached Harshit Rana, who also fumbled.

India narrowly escaped a loss as Shanaka was unable to return for the third run. Had Shanaka not been on the ground, he might have completed the third run.

Arshdeep Singh Conceded Just Two Runs In Super Over

Arshdeep Singh started brilliantly for India by dismissing Perera on the very first ball of the Super Over. Kamindu Mendis managed a single off the second ball to open Sri Lanka’s account.

Arshdeep then bowled a precise yorker outside off-stump to Shanaka, who failed to make contact. Shanaka was initially given out caught behind on the fourth ball, and Sanju Samson executed a run-out with a direct hit. UltraEdge later showed no contact, and the ball was considered dead.

However, Shanaka fell on the fifth ball. Jitesh Sharma completed the catch at deep backward point. Sri Lanka’s innings ended at just two runs. Suryakumar Yadav sealed the victory on the first ball. The Men in Blue will face Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final in Dubai on Sunday, September 28.

Sanju Samson Scored 39 Runs Off 23 Balls in India's Innings

Earlier in the match, India posted a formidable total of 202/5 in 20 overs. Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Sanju Samson played crucial innings for the Men in Blue. Sharma scored 61 off 31 balls, including eight boundaries and two sixes.

Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on 49 from 34 deliveries. Axar Patel contributed 21 runs off 15 balls, including a six off the final delivery.

Sanju Samson, batting at No. 5, scored 39 runs off 23 balls, hitting three sixes and one boundary. He also shared a vital 66-run partnership with Tilak Varma to stabilize India’s innings after the team slumped to 92/3.

Samson had previously recorded scores of 56 (45) and 13 (17) against Oman and Pakistan. He has been shuffled in the batting order by the team management throughout the tournament.
