Under pressure Shan Masood on Monday (October 7), scored a brilliant century to put his team in a commanding position on day one of the ongoing first Pakistan vs England Test in Multan.
The Pakistan captain was under immense pressure after his team's embarrassing series loss against Bangladesh at home in September. Before that series, Pakistan had not lost a single Test against Bangladesh. However, they failed to extend their unbeaten run against the Tigers as the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side clean-swept the two-match series.
It was Shan Masood's fifth defeat in as many games since he took charge of the Pakistan Test captain. Before the loss against Bangladesh, Pakistan had also suffered a 3-0 loss against Australia in Shan Masood's first series as the Test captain.
Unsurprisingly, all eyes were on the left-handed batsman when he walked out to bat on day one of the ongoing Test against England. Opting to bat first, Pakistan were off to a disastrous start as Saim Ayub was out for just 4 runs.
The onus was on Masood to bail his team out of trouble and he did not disappoint. The 34-year-old and Abdullah Shafique not only steadied the ship for their team but have batted it to a strong position. At the end of the 52nd over, Pakistan were on 233/1 with Masood batting on 130 and Shafique unbeaten on 94.
A brilliant century for Shan Masood:
The highlight of the first day of the Test was Shan Masood's century. The century is a special one for Masood as it is his first one as the Test captain. Masood caught everyone's attention not only with his century but also his positive approach with the bat.
Even though Pakistan lost an early wicket, their captain batted positively and did not shy away from playing his shots. As a result, he went on to score Pakistan's fastest Test century since Misbah-ul-Haq smashed a 56-ball century against Australia way back in 2014.
Masood completed his century off just 102 balls. Unsurprisingly, he received a standing ovation not only from his teammates but the entire stadium. As soon as Masood reached his century, the entire Pakistan team and all the fans stood up and applauded him.
