The 20-year-old England National Cricket Team off-spinner Shoaib Bashir dismantled the stumps of the 32-year-old Sri Lanka National Cricket Team tailender Prabath Jayasuriya in the second Test of the three-match series at the Lord's Cricket Ground in London on Friday, August 30.
Bashir has emerged as the first-choice spinner of the English team in the Bazball era, and he has received great backing from his skipper, Ben Stokes, who is currently out of action with an injury. Shoaib Bashir has also repaid the faith of his skipper by chipping in with crucial wickets for the team and making a significant contribution to the victories.
He delivered a good performance in the series-opening clash against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford in Manchester, as he registered bowling figures of 3/55 in the first innings before going wicketless in the second innings (0/77).
Meanwhile, in the Lord's Test, Shoaib Bashir got his first wicket in the 44th over of the match. On the last ball of the over, Bashir delivered an 82 kmph tossed-up delivery to Jayasuriya. The Sri Lankan player went down the track to play the shot, missed the delivery completely, and the ball spun sharply to beat the inside edge and hit the top of the leg stump.
Prabath Jayasuriya was cleaned up by the England National Cricket Team spinner for 8 runs off 46 balls. And his dismissal left Sri Lanka struggling at 153/8.

That's just beautiful bowling - Michael Vaughan hails Shoaib Bashir
Bashir's delivery to dismiss Jayasuriya impressed the former English captain Michael Vaughan a lot as speaking on the BBC Test Match Special, he said that the youngster has been doing beautiful bowling. He elaborated:
"That's just beautiful bowling. It's a little bit slower, a little bit more flight, and it's through the gate. Shoaib Bashir must've seen an indication that Jayasuriya was coming towards him.
"He wasn't scoring but he was doing his job, holding up an end for Kamindu Mendis. That's infuriating for the "in" batter, seeing a shot like that."
Michael Vaughan opined that the pitch assisting the spinners would leave Sri Lanka concerned as they are still way behind England's first-innings score of 427. He said:
"There are promising signs for the spinners. For every ball that spins, the Sri Lankan captain will be thinking, oh dear!."
Michael Vaughan also said that the Three Lions would have been in tremendous trouble if they batted last on the pitch, considering the amount of assistance the spinners have received as the match has progressed. He also lauded Ollie Pope's captaincy in the game.
"There is just enough there for the spinner, and that takes me back to the toss again. If England were made to bat last on this pitch, Prabath Jayasuriya would've been right in the game," he said as quoted by BBC.
'The bowlers have been tremendous and Ollie Pope has just manoeuvred his pieces brilliantly. The two wickets caught at leg slip were great tactics."
