India suffered an early blow on Day 4 of the ongoing first Test at Headingley as skipper Shubman Gill, who scored a stunning century in the first innings, was dismissed for just 8 runs off 16 balls by the England seamer Brydon Carse.
Shubman Gill’s wicket came as a major boost for England, as they are looking to build on the momentum after conceding only a 6-run lead in their first innings at Headingley. On the last ball of the 25th over, Brydon Carse delivered the breakthrough for the hosts.

Carse delivered a good-length delivery just outside off, and got the ball to nip back in sharply off the surface. Gill, who was set on the back foot and looking to cut, found himself cramped for space. The ball was too full and too close to his body for that shot, and it ended in disaster.
The Indian captain got a thick inside edge that crashed into the stumps, leaving him frustrated as he walked back to the pavilion for just 8 runs. It was a loose shot at the wrong time, and England capitalized and got exactly what they needed to start Day 4 against India. After a solid start in the first innings, Gill couldn’t replicate his form in the second innings at Headingley.
Brydon Carse's smart angle does the trick for Shubman Gill
Brydon Carse usually bowls with a natural angle that comes into right-handed batters, and at times he goes wider on the crease to make that inward movement even sharper. But this time, he changed things up by delivering the ball from a straighter position, closer to the middle of the crease.
That subtle adjustment worked perfectly for Shubman Gill, as the ball nipped back in just enough to surprise the Indian skipper and hit the stumps to shock the Indian camp on Day 4 at Headingley.
Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy opener set for thrilling finish
Earlier, Shubman Gill had played a record-breaking knock of 147 runs off 227 balls laced with 19 boundaries and a six in his first innings as India’s Test captain. He was also involved in two crucial partnerships—129runs with Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) and 209 runs with Rishabh Pant (134)—to help India post 471 runs on the board in the first innings against England at Headingley.
However, England bounced back and went on to manage 465 runs in reply to India’s 471, thanks to Ollie Pope’s century and Harry Brook’s classy 99 in the ongoing first Test. However, India’s poor fielding and ordinary bowling from the bowlers, except for Jasprit Bumrah, helped England to take the upper hand in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy opener.
Well, the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy is heading towards a thrilling finish, with both teams' second innings set to decide the outcome. KL Rahul is playing a calm and classy knock, helping the tourists to build a strong lead. Rahul is currently batting at 52*, while Rishabh Pant is at 15*
