India National Cricket Team T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill has not been able to get going in the ongoing edition of the Asia Cup 2025.

Shubman Gill failed to get good runs in the last Group Stage match of the Asia Cup 2025 against the Oman National Cricket Team at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, on Friday, September 19.

Gill made his comeback to the Indian T20I setup on the back of his heroics in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, where he set the stage on fire while leading the side.

The BCCI selection committee also handed the vice-captaincy to Gill in T20Is, and reports claimed that it was done to send a message to captain Suryakumar Yadav to step up with the bat, as the youngster is being seen as the future all-format captain.

The inclusion of Gill in the T20I setup as vice-captain meant that he was guaranteed a place in the playing XI, and India had to break the successful opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma.

Gill started opening the innings with Abhishek Sharma, and Sanju Samson was demoted in the batting order. However, Shubman Gill has failed to justify his place in the side, scoring just 20*, 10, and 5 in the first three matches.

In the match against Oman, he fell in the second over itself as the left-arm pacer Shah Faisal bowled a stunning full delivery that swung in late, and Gill was drawn into the drive.

The batter left a big gap between bat and pad, and the ball went on to shatter his stumos for 8-ball 5. Also, that over by Shah Faisal was a wicket maiden.

India bat first for the first time in the Asia Cup 2025

India won the toss and opted to bat first for the first time in the Asia Cup 2025, as they won their first two matches while chasing. Speaking on ESPNCricinfo ahead of the match, Sanjay Bangar also advised India to bat first. He said:

"I do think so, that they might just opt to bat first and by doing that, I think not only from a batsman's perspective, but even from the bowler's perspective, whether if at all there is any dew, which is highly unlikely, but if there is dew, then you do get a chance or an outing wherein you know that, okay, the team has gone through all the possibilities and the situations that they might come across.

"I think it's part of preparation wherein you don't want to really have one way to win cricket matches and the Indian team has shown that they're superb when they do either of it and that their record has been tremendous over the last 18 months."
