Batting great Sunil Gavaskar didn't shy away from attacking the coaching staff of the India National Cricket Team after the 3-1 series loss against the Australia National Cricket Team. He said that questions should be asked to them about their performance and their future for the England series.
India National Cricket Team are finally out of the race for the final of the ICC World Test Championship. This came after the Rohit Sharma-led suffered a shambolic 3-1 loss in the five-match Test series against the Australia National Cricket Team and also the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after 10 years.
Poor batting was a major reason behind the poor outing of India in Australia
One of the major reasons behind the poor outing of the India National Cricket Team in the entire series was the poor batting effort. The batters failed to perform consistently throughout the series and had that happened, the result surely would've been different.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was the top scorer for the team, and KL Rahul started the series well but couldn't finish well. The rest of the batters looked torrid throughout the series, and this has seen players, along with the coaching staff, facing a lot of criticism for their poor efforts.
"What was your coaching staff doing? - Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar also launched an attack on the coaching staff of the India National Cricket Team. He questioned the Gautam Gambhir-led staff for their work with the batters, highlighting that batting looked worse at home as well in Australia. He said that if the fans question a player's spot in the team, then the same should be there for the coaching staff as well. Speaking to Star Sports, he explained:
"What was your coaching staff doing? Your bowling coach, batting coach... Look, the way we got all-out against New Zealand, 46 all-out, the way we lost the rest of the matches, there was no strength in our batting, there was no strength in our batting here as well. So, we should ask the question, what did you guys do? Why can't we see any improvement?
"Show us, there were such good balls, that our batsmen couldn't face them. That's fine, that reason is fine. If there are good balls, then there's no problem. Every great batter has a problem when he gets good balls. But, when that's not happening, then you tell me, what did you do? You might ask in this program, should we let them play in the future? Should we keep them in the future?" questioned Sunil Gavaskar.
Ask the coaching staff, what did you do? - Sunil Gavaskar on Gautam Gambhir-led staff
Sunil Gavaskar questioned the future of the coaching staff, saying that they didn't correct the technique and temperament of players. He elaborated:
"We should also ask, should we let the coaching staff play in the future? We have 2-3 months before we go to England. I'm not talking about the Champions Trophy. I'm talking about 5 Test matches. I was a Test match player. I know about one-day cricket, but not that much. That's why I'll ask, what did you do?
"How can you improve them? Tell me, how can you improve them? What did you do? Throwdown is not enough. You had to make their technique and temperament. You didn't do that. So, do ask questions to players who didn't make runs, but also ask the coaching staff, what did you do?" questioned Sunil Gavaskar.
