Meanwhile, Travis Head and Steve Smith are piling up runs for Australia in the ongoing third Test against India. They have already added 200+ runs and became the second pair after Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke to have the most 200+ partnerships against India in Test cricket.
Ponting and Clarke managed to stitch a 200+ partnership three times, while Head and Smith have done it twice against India. In the WTC Final 2023, Smith and Head built a massive 285-run partnership, which was the last 200+ stand for any wicket by any team against India.
Steve Smith's return to form will act as an incentive for Virat Kohli: Sunil Gavaskar
On the other hand, Virat Kohli has been going through a lean patch, and he would love to return among the runs in the batting-friendly Gabba. However, the former Indian skipper had smashed a century in the first Test in Perth, but in the Adelaide Test, he failed to carry forward his form against Australia.
Reacting to Smith's return to form, Sunil Gavaskar believes that it brings a unique advantage for India, as it could ignite Kohli’s competitive spirit. The former Indian captain said that Smith’s century has the perfect incentive for Kohli to raise his game and dominate once again.
Sunil Gavaskar said on commentary on Day 2 of the Gabba Test: “This will act as an incentive for Virat Kohli. When you talk about the fab four (Smith, Kohli, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson), when the man at this end gets a good score, the man in the other camp (Kohli) will want to get a 100 as well.”
