Washington Sundar ends Joe Root's big streak
The 25-year-old Washington Sundar's selection in the India Test playing XI has received massive criticism. However, the youngster has continued to shut down his critics with his performances on the field.
On the moving day of the Lord's Test, Sundar brought the momentum back towards India by picking up big wickets of Joe Root and Jamie Smith in quick succession.
On the fourth ball of the 43rd over, Joe Root went down to sweep Washington Sundar, leaving his leg stumps exposed. The ball drifted in and sneaked past Root's swinging blade to rattle the stumps. Seeing Root get dismissed, Gautam Gambhir couldn't keep calm and hurled an expletive.
Root was dismissed for 40 runs off 96 balls, with one four, and with this his streak of consecutive 50+ scores at Lord's - 68, 143, 103, 104, 40 - was ended by the Indian spin-bowling all-rounder.
Sundar was not done yet as he cleaned up the best batter of England in the ongoing series - Jamie Smith - in the 47th over.
On the second ball of the 47th over, Washington Sundar bowled a flatter delivery to Jamie Smith that drifted, and the English batter hung on the back foot, played down the wrong line, and saw the ball beat his outside edge to crash into the stumps. Smith was dismissed for 14-ball 8.

It’s a bit of a collector’s item to see Root miss a sweep - Ian Ward
Speaking on Sky Sports, Ian Ward expressed his surprise over Joe Root missing a sweep shot and getting bowled. He stated:
“It’s a bit of a collector’s item to see Root miss a sweep. Maybe he was distracted by his bat handle, who knows? Stokes and Root were starting to milk the India spinners but Washington has just got rid of England’s best.”
Meanwhile, Alastair Cook, while speaking on the BBC Test Match Special, felt that Joe Root miscalculated the shot, which resulted in his dismissal. He stated:
"That was a bit of miscalculation from Joe Root. I think he got his bearing slightly wrong. Just when you felt a partnership was taking the game away, a wicket falls and its even Stevens again."
Also, former England spinner Phil Tufnell talked of Washington Sundar dismissing Jamie Smith and said:
"Bit of a grubber, didn't really bounce, it's just the line and the length. Smith as gone back to a fullish ball and it's gone past the outside edge and clipped the off stump. Lovely sort of arm ball or a dirfter and he's done him for length there as well. That really has opened the game wide open."
