Watch: Washington Sundar pulls off jaw-dropping return catch to remove Alick Athanaze in Ahmedabad Test
Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar got the much-awaited breakthrough after Lunch, as Alick Athanaze top-edged a return catch to the bowling end and Sundar grabbed it with sharp reflexes.
Indian batters KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja have all dominated with the bat, as they scored a century each. Shubman Gill too scored a half-century but could not convert it into a bigger inning from the team's point of view.
India dominated the Windies in the first Test of the two-match series in Ahmedabad. While the Indian players dominated with both bat and ball, the Baggy Blue went on to claim an easy victory in the opening Test. This will mark India's third win in the WTC 2025-27.
Watch: Washington Sundar shows stunning reflexes to dismiss the set West Indies batter
India had already dismissed 5 of the West Indies batters in the first session of the game. The Indian spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav picked 4 wickets. On the other hand, just when Justin Greaves and Alick Athanaze were building on a partnership, Washington Sundar led to his third dismissal.
The partnership was finally broken. Sundar bowled a full ball on the off stump that straightened after being pitched as Athanaze tried to close the face and work it towards the leg side. However, he went in early with the shot as it took the leading edge and popped up to the bowler's right.
Sundar moved across and stretched out his right hand to complete the catch safely.

Washington Sundar replaces Ravindra Jadeja in the Indian ODI squad
Washington Sundar, the spin-bowling all-rounder, has been handed several opportunities under Gautam Gambhir's reign as the head coach of the Indian National Cricket Team. Sundar played a crucial role for India in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Considering his special antics, Sundar has been cited as a highly preferable all-rounder across all formats of the game. Sundar has been cited as Ravindra Jadeja's replacement in the Indian 50-over format.
Jadeja last played for India in the Champions Trophy, but this time he has been dropped from the squad. Sundar has featured in 23 ODIs for India, having made his debut back in 2017.
He was part of the Indian side in the England ODI home series, which was played in February 2025. The batter has amassed 329 runs and has picked up 24 wickets as well.
Washington Sundar back in India's T20I squad for the Australia tour
Washington Sundar, the Gujarat Titans all-rounder, played several stunning knocks for the Titans with the bat while also bowling some spectacular spells with the ball. Though he has been handed some limited opportunities in white-ball cricket, he is slowly evolving as India's upcoming all-format all-rounder.
Sundar, who was not picked in the Asia Cup, has returned to the Indian T20I side, as they have added a 16th player to the squad. Nitish Kumar Reddy, on the other hand, has replaced Hardik Pandya in both the ODI and T20I squads.
Sundar is an ideal fit into Gautam Gambhir's batting department model for the shortest format of the game.
