England won the toss and opted to bat first in the match. This was a major shift in the Bazballing England Team's strategy as they have mostly preferred chasing in the fourth innings under the new regime of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.
Since being appointed as the full-time captain in 2022, it was only the second instance of Ben Stokes opting to bat first in a home Test match, with the other instance being the first Test of the Ashes 2023 at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
Meanwhile, England started off well with the bat, but their innings derailed in the 14th over when Nitish Kumar Reddy's twin strikes sent Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley packing.
After the duo got out, Joe Root and Ollie Pope joined forces in the middle to steer England out of trouble. Root and Pope have been more or less successful as the Three Lions have touched the 140-run mark without losing any wickets, but this has come at the cost of Bazball being tamed.
Joe Root and Ollie Pope have played a little too cautiously, and the aggressive Bazball style of cricket is nowhere to be seen, with the run rate being around 3 or less.
Seeing this, the India National Cricket Team Test captain Shubman Gill took a sharp jibe at England for not ‘Bazballing’. He said, "No more entertaining cricket. Welcome back to boring Test cricket, boys".

You know, bat first, get 450 on the board and then try and control it from there - Stuart Broad
Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the match, the pace-bowling legend Stuart Broad gave a report on the pitch, saying:
"I don't think we're going to get loads of pace, loads of bounce, and also saying that a couple of days before the test match starts, the preparation of this would have been months ago. Yeah, so you can't make much change. But yeah, ultimately, I think Test match pitches, they shouldn't seem around all over the place, but they should carry.
"If you make a mistake as a batter and you nick it, it should carry to the slips. And I don't think this will be overly quick. I think the sunshine will bring some wear and tear into this come day three and four. I just think it might turn out the footholds later on.'
Stuart Broad further said that batting first and posting 450 runs should be the target for England. He said:
"It's a bat first day, isn't it, just beautiful blue sky. There's no real live green tinge on it. There's no massive moisture in there. If I was in that changing room and Stokesy came to me and said, I'm thinking of bowling, I'd be thinking of every way to manipulate that brain into batting. But yeah, to me, this feels a bit old school. You know, bat first, get 450 on the board and then try and control it from there."
