It was a heart-in-mouth moment; South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder collapsed on the pitch before even bowling his first ball of his over in the ongoing second ODI match against Australia at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on Friday, August 22.

The scary incident unfolded in the 10th over of Australia’s innings in Mackay. Wiaan Mulder started the over with a good length outside off delivery, and Cameron Green pushed it for a single towards the cover point, but before the actual first ball of the over, the Proteas star Wiaan Mulder almost gave a heart attack to players and fans.

Charging in with full rhythm, Mulder suddenly lost his footing, and his back leg slid awkwardly as he crashed into his follow-through. For a moment, the entire stadium feared a nasty injury. But Mulder showed calmness in the tense moment and managed to stand on his feet.

He inspected the landing area and walked back to his mark like nothing had happened. On his second delivery, Mulder turned the tables on Australia. Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was eager to dominate, as he went for a risky pull shot off Mulder’s delivery that wasn’t quite short enough.

Marsh played a mistimed shot and paid the price for it. The ball went straight up in the air, and substitute fielder Corbin Bosch, who was stationed at the mid-on, barely had to move before safely taking the easy catch to send the stand-in Australian captain back to the dugout for 18 runs off 25 balls.

Aiden Markram takes charge as Temba Bavuma rested for the second ODI against Australia

Meanwhile, Aiden Markram is captaining South Africa in the second ODI against Australia on Friday, as the regular captain, Temba Bavuma, was rested to manage his workload.

The CSA posted on X: “ODI captain Temba Bavuma has been rested for the second match against Australia. This decision is part of his workload management, as he recovered from a hamstring strain that he sustained during the WTC Final in June.

Although he experienced no discomfort during the first ODI, the Proteas medical team recommended that he be rested for the second match. He will be available to lead the side in the third ODI on Sunday, with Aiden Markram standing in as captain today.”

Australia in trouble chasing 278 after an early collapse in the 2nd ODI

Markram decided to bat first after winning the toss against the hosts in Mackay. The Proteas side managed to post 277 runs on the board, thanks to Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs’ stunning knocks of 88 and 74 runs against the hosts in the ongoing second ODI.

Tony de Zorzi also played a handy knock of 38 runs. For Australia, Adam Zampa was the standout bowler with three scalps, while Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, and Marnus Labuschagne each had two wickets against South Africa in Mackay.

Chasing the target, Australia had a poor start, losing two wickets for just 7 runs, and then they lost Marsh. Still, the hosts need 145 runs in 22.2 overs with five wickets in hand against South Africa.
