Aaron Finch, limited-overs captain of Australia, has thrown his and his team members’ weight behind the head coach, Justin Langer, for the earlier reports stating that the players were not happy with his hard-task coaching method.
Following the home Test series defeat to India, reports emerged in Nine newspapers that there were rumblings between the Australian players and the head coach; the report said that the players thought Langer demanded too much from them and was involved more than he should have in the bowling department.
Now, before flying to the West Indies for the limited-overs tour, Langer assembled everyone for a “confronting” team review. Aaron Finch revealed that the leadership consultant Tim Ford was also involved in it. The Test players, including skipper Tim Paine, also joined in the meeting.
“Over the couple of days on the Gold Coast we had a great camp…the ability for JL to address a few issues that came up in the review with Tim Ford, that was brilliant from him to tackle them head on, suppose put his side of the story, that shows the quality of the man he is and things he’s working on,” Aaron Finch, who has reached St Lucia, was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
“We are all behind him 100%, the way he’s coached Australia in the last couple of years has been fantastic, think we’ve had some really good success. No doubt it was quite confronting for him at the time but he took it head on and it was great. Very positive from our point of view.”
They’ll be no management for Test cricket: Aaron Finch
Unlike England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Australia won’t be resting players for Test cricket. England have made the rest-and-rotation policy a matter of high priority and key players have been rested, to manage workload, for important matches.
“We are going to have to manage players a little differently over the coming 12-24 months, however long the way cricket is. So while it’s not the perfect preparation we are not alone in that and it will give an opportunity to continue to develop our depth and find some more solutions.“The T20 World Cup is an international event, the one piece of [limited-overs] silverware that was eluded us. They’ll be no management for Test cricket, I can tell you that much,” the right-handed opener stated.
