Dinesh Karthik has said that the Indian team has not been lucky enough in the ICC events’ knockout stages to win the tournament. However, he said that Men in Blue have been very consistent in reaching the knockout stages of whichever ICC event they have played since winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 in England.

The wicketkeeper-batsman has been part of many ICC events with Team India, starting from the ICC Champions Trophy in 2004, was part of the winning squad in ICC T20 World Cup in 2007 in South Africa and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 in England. Recently, he was part of the Indian team which reached the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup 2019.

Unluckily The Rub Of The Green Has Not Gone Our Way: Dinesh Karthik

Talking to Sportskeeda.com, Dinesh Karthik highlighted the problem behind the Indian team not winning any ICC event since 2013, despite reaching the semi-finals of the 2015 ICC World Cup and the 2016 T20 World Cup, the finals of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy and the semi-finals of the 2019 ICC World Cup. He said that the Men in Blue were the most consistent teams in the world, but have also been unlucky in knockout stages.

“There is no code to crack. When you play a tournament like that (ICC competitions) the most important thing is the league phase. If you’re a consistent team, more often than not you will reach the knockout stage. India as a cricketing nation has always done that,” said Dinesh Karthik, while speaking to Sportskeeda.

Dinesh Karthik also mentioned that though the Indian team has been consistent in reaching the knockout stages of various ICC events, the luck factor has eluded them constantly, leading to a barren period of time with no ICC trophies.

In almost every tournament that we’ve played, we’ve reached the knockouts. In the knockouts, it depends on whatever happens that one day. Unluckily the rub of the green has not gone our way. Almost every ICC tournament, we’ve made it to the semi-finals. But you have one bad day and it so happens to be on that day,” Dinesh Karthik explained.

Only A Matter Of Time India Wins An ICC Trophy

However, the 2007 T20 World Cup winner Dinesh Karthik said that one cannot be too harsh on the team and mentioned that with the talent the team possesses, it is only a matter of time, the Indian team wins an ICC Trophy. Incidentally, India will be hosting the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup.

“You can’t be too harsh on yourself and pinpoint too many wrong things. I think given the talent and the kind of players that we have I’m sure it is only a matter of time. It will happen definitely,” Dinesh Karthik concluded.
