Indian skipper Shikhar Dhawan lauded the Sri Lankan team for their brilliant series win besides hailing his group of men for showing the character despite all the odds stacked against them in the last two games.
India never really turned up on Thursday as Sri Lankan spinners led by Wanindu Hasaranga ran riot to clean up their top-order in the powerplay itself.
India never really recovered from the collapse as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals, eventually meandering to 8/81 in 20 overs.
Sri Lankan batters took their time but eventually overhauled the target in 14.3 overs with seven wickets still in the bank to notch up their first bilateral series win over India [across formats] since 2008.
Dhawan admitted that the batting unit had an off-day today but he was full of praise for the attitude that his young team showed in adversity.
The southpaw was spotted talking to the Sri Lankan team after the match. When asked about the details of the conversation, Dhawan said that the young Sri Lankans wanted to know about his process and he was apprising them about the same.
He signed off by congratulating the Sri Lankan team for their first-ever bilateral T20I series win over India and their first series win in the format since September 2019.
”It was a difficult situation for us. As a team we decided to stay and play these games. Really proud of the way the boys as well. They showed great character in the last two games. Their attitude was tremendous. We wanted to win as well, in every game you learn. It was a off day for our batting unit. We lost too many wickets, SL bowled well. When you lose early wickets, you get a lot of pressure, glad that we got to 80s, that’s all we managed today,” said Shikhar Dhawan.
