Senior Indian right-arm speedster Mohammed Shami has opened up on facing online abuse after India’s 10-wicket defeat against Pakistan National Cricket Team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.

Indian pacer Shami became the main target of the online trolls after India’s humiliating defeat against the arch-rivals Babar Azam-led Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, which eventually led to India’s exit from the marquee tournament.

Shami’s social media was bombarded with hate messages, labelling him as a traitor and alleging he had taken money from Pakistan. However, almost every famous Indian cricketer came out in support of Shami and former Indian captain Virat Kohli bashed the online trolls during a press conference.

In an interview with the Indian Express, pacer Mohammed Shami said that the people who trolled him after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 were neither “real fans nor were they real Indians”.

Mohammed Shami further added that the online trolls are “nobodies” and they have nothing to lose and the players should ignore them.

When people with unknown social media profiles or even one with a few followers point fingers at someone, they don’t have anything to lose, For them, nothing is at stake because they are nobodies… we don’t need to engage with them.”

Shami added that he represents India at the international level and doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone.

“We know what we are, we don’t need to say what India means to us because we represent the country and fight for the country. So we don’t need to prove anything to anyone by saying or reacting to such trolls.”
