Indian captain Rohit Sharma opened up on the loss his team faced in the final of the ICC World Cup 2023. He admitted that they weren’t good enough, adding that they gave everything they had but they were outplayed by Australia.

India suffered another heartbreak as they lost by 6 wickets in the final of the ICC World Cup 2023. They were thrashed by Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as they didn’t get up to the mark with bat and ball.

After being asked to bat first, India were bundled out for just 240 runs. KL Rahul (66) was the top run scorer for his team whereas Virat Kohli (54) and Rohit Sharma (47) chipped in as well. Rest all the batters couldn’t get going at all.

With the ball, India picked quick wickets and were at the top having reduced Australia to 47/3. But after that, nothing went their way as Travis Head (137) and Marnus Labuschagne (58*) took the game away from India with their staggering 192-run partnership and took the team home.

India gave their everything in the World Cup as they were dominant in the league stage, winning 9 out of the 9 games. After that in the semi-final, they were on the top as well as they thrashed New Zealand by 70 runs. However, this didn’t go their way in the final as they bagged a disappointing loss.

Rohit Sharma admitted that they were 20-30 runs short and they lost wickets at crucial junctures of the game. He expressed his disappointment, saying that things didn’t go their way. Speaking during the post-match presentation, he explained:

“The result has not gone our way. We were not good enough today. We tried everything but it wasn’t supposed to be. 20-30 runs more would have been good, KL and Kohli were stitching a good partnership and we were looking at 270-280 but we kept losing wickets.”

Rohit Sharma also talked about how the wicket got easier to bat in the second innings but he was quick to quip that he isn’t giving it as an excuse. He also credited Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne for their partnership. He added:

“When you have 240 on the board, you want to take wickets but credit to Head and Labuschagne for putting us out of the game, but I feel the wicket got slightly better to bat under lights. Don’t want to give that as an excuse. We didn’t put enough runs on the board. Credit to those two guys in the middle for putting up an outstanding partnership.”

It remains to be seen what will be the future of the India team after the loss in the final. They will be next seen in action when they will take on Australia in the five-match T20I series, starting next week.
