"Welcome back, fighter" - Gautam Gambhir's appointment as India head coach makes fans go berserk on social media

Fans on Twitter reacted after former skipper Gautam Gambhir was announced as the head coach of the India National Cricket Team. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor was announced as the replacement of Rahul Dravid on Tuesday (9th July).

Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach of the Indian team ended after the T20 World Cup 2024. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been on the hunt for a head coach ever since the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 concluded. Since then there was just one name in talks and it was Gautam Gambhir.

The reports claimed that BCCI was impressed with the way Gautam Gambhir mentored Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024 and hence were keen to rope him in. He along with the BCCI was on the same page regarding what they must do for the nation as India back then didn’t had an ICC trophy since 2013.

It was only a matter of time before BCCI announced him as the head coach of the team. Secretary Jay Shah then through the social media post made the announcement and stated that the KKR mentor understands the game well and there is no better person than him to take the team forward. He stated:

“It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward."

Gautam, who won the ICC T20 World 2007 and the ICC World Cup 2011, will be joining the team on the back of very little coaching experience. He only has mentored Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL and had incredible success with them.

Gautam Gambhir will be taking over the charge of the India team in the upcoming away series against Sri Lanka. India will be playing 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is on their tour to Sri Lanka and the former skipper of the team would be keen to make an immediate impact for the team.

Gautam Gambhir is likely to be the head coach of the India team will the 2027 World Cup. He will have some massive assignments on his head as India will be touring Australia for Tests and after that, there will be the ICC Champions Trophy and the ICC World Test Championship final.
