England all-rounder Moeen Ali attributed his team’s poor performance in World Cup 2023 to low confidence and out-of-form batters. Moeen Ali admitted that England couldn’t play their usual aggressive style, which had been their hallmark for the past decade.

The Jos Buttler-led team was considered heavy favorites to defend the title but failed to secure a berth in the knockout stages. England managed just three wins out of nine games and spent most of the time at the bottom of the standings, finishing in sixth place.

It Was Becoming More Internal – Moeen Ali

Speaking to Gulf News, Moeen Ali acknowledged that England didn’t perform well throughout the tournament. Ali noted the team’s inability to play their usual aggressive style, comparing it to successful teams like India, South Africa, and Australia.

“I think the confidence was very low and nobody was in form. And to some of us, it was becoming more internal. Sometimes the harder you try, the worse you get. I think we’ve been playing so well for 10 years before that,” Ali told Gulf News.

“If you look at the best teams, India, who played well, were aggressive, South Africa were generally aggressive and so were the Australians. We just couldn’t do what we normally do and the timing was really bad.”

“We didn’t play well throughout the World Cup. The batters were out of form and it happens in cricket. We’ve been so good over a long period of time now, but it is just one of those things that we just didn’t perform. It is a World Cup and a special one where all teams were good, but we weren’t just good,” Ali added.

Didn’t Have Enough Runs On The Board – Moeen Ali

Moeen Ali mentioned that England’s failure to score sufficient runs had an impact on their bowling performances in the World Cup. He suggested that various factors, including the conditions and ground, influenced their performance.

“We have played a lot in India before. All depends on the wickets and the ground etc, So we had the spinners but didn’t have enough runs on the board. Everything went wrong,” Ali continued.

The all-rounder had a challenging tournament, contributing to England’s struggles with both bat and ball. The 36-year-old scored only 95 runs in six innings at an average of 15.83. He managed to take five wickets but at an average close to 50.
